Draft of Strategic Plan 2010

CBAA is currently developing a five-year strategic plan. To do this, the Strategic Planning Committee* began with a plan drafted by the Development Committee and sent to everyone on the CBAA board for comments. The draft you see here is based on all of that information.

In addition, there are some new initiatives suggested by the Strategic Planning Committee. The final section, Ideas, are taken from board feedback to the original proposal. The priorities are listed as high, medium and low; most include suggested annual financing goals.

Now it's your turn! As current and past board members, your feedback is vital to this process. You can post comments until May 1st on the plan, make suggestions for new initiatives, rank the ideas in terms of their importance to you. While you can post anonymously, it would be great if everyone put their name to their posts so we can have some conversation.

Once the board members have responded, the responses will again be incorporated into a revised draft plan that the entire membership will be invited to comment on. Once all comments are collated, the Executive Committee and then the full board will vote on the plan, which will be presented at the January, 2011, conference.

Thanks for your input into this vital work to help define CBAA's goals for the next few years.

For your information, the original organizational goals set up at the 2006 meeting in Alabama are included here.

These initiatives seem inline with CBAA's goals and mission and are intelligently prioritized. My only concern is that there appear to be high dollar amounts associated with the many High and Medium priority goals. In order to facilitate implementation, perhaps it might make sense to go so far as to more specifically prioritize items, giving some initiatives a rating of Very High? Or perhaps this is the next step in strategic planning...

With regard to Infrastructure, I would suggest that we consider this a higher priority. When ARLIS/NA hired an administrative company to coordinate all the conference management and membership details it made such a difference. Organizing a large conference is extremely demanding and time-consuming for individuals who have other full time jobs. Removing a lot of the practical details from members' conference planning responsibilities leaves more time for them to work on conference programming. It also provides for administrative record-keeping and smooth transitions in leadership.
    See the ARLIS/NA website http://www.arlisna.org

With regard to New Initiatives, under the heading IDEAS, the item that reads "seek matching funds for faculty professional research to benefit the field" I would like to see us add "and librarian" after the word "faculty". In the same section in the item that reads "clearinghouse for faculty talks at institutions" I would also like to add "and librarian" after the word "faculty".

I agree with Marnie's suggestion that we might want to take another look at the amounts we have allotted (or not indicated) for grants and awards and discuss these further.

In order to promote our organization more widely, we might want to establish liaisons to other organizations with similar interests such as ARLIS/NA. Liaisons would be members of these other organizations as well and could send or bring brochures to their conferences and answer questions about CBAA.

Do we have or plan to have a list of undergraduate and graduate book arts programs on our website? I get those kinds of questions from students frequently.

  3. I agree with all the items designated as high priorities, but I would favor adding website development to the list of high priority goals for 2010, and probably for each of the next few years. A website is such a basic portal to the identity and activities of any organization that it needs quality attention, especially in the early years. Offering links to member websites and/or pages about book art programs would be useful. Images from the conference members' exhibitions would create an ongoing historical record. The Communications Committee and the Board have probably talked about many other specific ideas for website improvement. Just one or two upgrades per year might get us where we ought to be in five years.

  4. Sorry, I don't know how I got the name "CBAA board" for my comment just above. I'm not very technologically savy!
